“So let us begin tonight by recognizing that the state of our Union is strong because our people are strong.” -Donald Trump
Less than one year after his inauguration into Office, President Donald Trump stood before both Democrats and Republicans to deliver his first State Of The Union Address. A lot has happened for America in the past year, and President Trump and his administration have worked to enact a LOT of change. Lasting a full hour and twenty minutes, the speech is one of the longest SOTU (State Of The Union) Addresses in American history. Let’s take a look at the most powerful points of his speech.
#1 America First
President Trump made it very clear that America First will remain his policy throughout the rest of his term in office. His passion is to restore the greatness of America on the world stage, and because of the work of the Trump Administration, our beautiful USA is back to being a top exporter of coal and natural resources. President Trump is proud of the richness of this great land, and is allowing Americans to finally use it again.
Another America-First example is the new way of approaching trade deals. “America has finally turned the page on decades of unfair trade deals that sacrificed our prosperity and shipped away our companies, our jobs, and our wealth. The era of economic surrender is totally over,” He stated to Congress, and to Americans everywhere. “From now on we expect trading relationships to be fair and — very importantly — reciprocal.’’
America is generous, but we will be trampled down no longer. President Trump is putting his business background to very good use in negotiating trade deals that will begin to benefit the American people as well as the rest of the world. This is just one of the tactics our President is using to Make America Great Again.
#2 Americans Are Dreamers, Too
Since the very beginning of Donald Trump’s campaign for President, the Left has touted him as a racist, and discriminatory against immigrants and people of color. If he hadn’t disproved those lies before, he certainly did in his State Of The Union Address.
President Trump proposed a reasonable compromise to the problem of how to deal with the Dreamers dilemma. An estimated 3.6 million illegally immigrated children have caused an uproar in Congress, the all-consuming question being should they stay, or be deported? President Trump has an interesting solution. Allow a twelve year period for the Dreamers to prove themselves well-educated, hard workers, of high moral standing, and lovers of America. At the end of twelve years, if a Dreamer has committed no crime and meets these standards, he or she will be granted citizenship in the United States.
Trump proved a powerful point about illegal immigration when he brought in Evelyn Rodriguez, Freddy Cuevas, Elizabeth Alvarado, and Robert Mickens- the parents of two teenage girls who had been brutally murdered near their home on Long Island by members of the MS-13 gang, who had illegally entered America.
“I am calling on Congress to finally close the deadly loopholes that allow MS-13 and other criminal gangs to break into our country. We have proposed new legislation that will fix our immigration laws.” Trump announced.
He proved that his plans are not anti-immigrant, he welcomes legal immigrants who will be proud to be Americans. His plans are to only allow in the true, honest people who want good lives, freedom, and a chance at the American Dream. By allowing illegals such as the MS-13 gang to enter America, we endanger our citizens, our children, and our legal immigrants who have worked so hard to get here.
President Trump is filling in the gaps of our immigration system in defense of the American people, whether they were born here or they legally immigrated, because Americans Are Dreamers, Too.
#3 Jobs And Taxes
To the chagrin of all Trump-hating liberals, he announced that under his leadership, African-American unemployment is at an all time low… and so is Hispanic unemployment. Creating 2.4 million jobs within the first quarter of his Presidential term, Donald Trump and his administration have been working tirelessly to serve the people- as the government was intended by our Founding Fathers to do.
And jobs aren’t the only thing changing for the better in America- enacting one of the biggest tax cuts in American history, Trump’s Administration has nearly doubled the standard deduction for everyone, as well as child tax credit. Now, the first $24,000 earned by a married couple is completely tax-free. Tax bills will be sliced in half for the average American family, and tax cuts are affecting the average Americans workers too. Because of the tax cut, businesses everywhere are issuing bonuses to their employees. Even Apple announced it’s plans to hire another 20,000 workers, and invest three hundred and fifty billion dollars into America.
Because of lower taxes, jobs are being created all over the country. Families are able to save more money to provide for their kids, and people seeking new starts have a better opportunity to rise.
“This is our new American moment. There has never been a better time to start living the American Dream. So to every citizen watching at home tonight — no matter where you have been, or where you come from, this is your time. If you work hard, if you believe in yourself, if you believe in America, then you can dream anything, you can be anything, and together, we can achieve anything.” -Donald Trump
#4 The Importance of Freedom
One of the most powerful and compelling stories that Trump told was the story of Ji Seong-ho. As a young North Korean boy, he passed out from malnourishment and exhaustion on train tracks where he had been waiting to steal coal to barter for food. He woke up when a train slashed through his limbs. He had to endure amputations with nothing to dull the pain, thanks to callous and inadequate North Korean medical treatment. Later, after a brief visit to China, he was tortured by North Korean authorities who demanded to know if he had met any Christians. In that moment, Ji Seong-Ho resolved to be free.
He travelled on crutches across Southeast Asia and China to find the freedom he yearned for, and he did find it. Now, he lives in Seoul and rescues other people yearning for freedom. After the story of his journey was told, Ji Seong-Ho stood and raised high over his head the very crutches that had carried him to freedom. The applause in the room was deafening.
“Seong-ho’s story is a testament to the yearning of every human soul to live in freedom,” President Trump said. “It was that same yearning for freedom that nearly 250 years ago gave birth to a special place called America. It was a small cluster of colonies caught between a great ocean and a vast wilderness. But it was home to an incredible people with a revolutionary idea: that they could rule themselves. That they could chart their own destiny. And that, together, they could light up the world.”
#5 The America We Love
President Trump spoke of many other things. The goodness of Americans, the end of our tolerance of evil, support of our veterans, lowering the cost of medical drugs for American families, respect for our flag, but he ended his speech by reminding us of who we are- Americans. Tough, and good, and willing to fight for the same freedom our founders fought for.
For the first time in a long time, an American President was displaying pride in his people, and his nation. He wasn’t apologizing for fantasized faults, or lecturing the people on their inadequacies. He was proud to lead them, to be one of them, and to adore the great nation we call home. He ended his first State Of The Union Address with a moving statement that touched the hearts of all absolute patriots.
“Americans fill the world with art and music. They push the bounds of science and discovery. And they forever remind us of what we should never forget: The people dreamed this country. The people built this country. And it is the people who are making America great again.
As long as we are proud of who we are, and what we are fighting for, there is nothing we cannot achieve.
As long as we have confidence in our values, faith in our citizens, and trust in our God, we will not fail.
Our families will thrive.
Our people will prosper.
And our Nation will forever be safe and strong and proud and mighty and free.
Thank you, and God bless America.”
