With the NFL Superbowl LII fast approaching and what may be the most “patriotic” Super Bowl ever – the EAGLES vs. the Patriots, discussions over the national anthem protests are back in at the watercolor and social media. The hypocrisy displayed by rich professional athletes protesting our nation’s flag and anthem shows a willing disregard of the facts how these protests are doing more harm to the cause of social justice than anything else. Not only do these protests dishonor the very nation that has afforded them to rise from obscurity, many of them from poverty and violent inner-city life, to become millionaire man playing a game. It’s a beautiful country!
Spoiled Rich Athletes
The protests began with Colin Kaepernick in 2016 when he refused to stand for the national anthem. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color” Kaepernick stated regarding his protests. Since then, dozens of NFL players have refused to stand for the Star Spangled Banner, choosing instead to use their fame to protest the anthem and what it stands for – the tyranny of racism in America. Because America is inherently racist… right?
This is demonstrably wrong. Inherent or systemic racism would of course mean there are laws singling out and penalizing minorities specifically. There certainly was systemic racism in this nation but those laws and racist institutional policies have been rightfully eliminated.
Many of these social justice warriors have fallen prey to the democrat party’s masterful marketing job of convincing blacks and minorities that they are victims of an American system that oppresses minorities socially, economically and politically. They’ve been convinced that without democrat party politics in their corner that we as a nation would certainly return to the days of segregation, Jim Crow and even slavery. We hear it every election cycle.
The False Narrative
Systemic racism is a narrative circulated by the progressive left to acquire political support from the minority communities, and the ironic thing about this narrative is that it’s being elevated by minority athletes who are living in the top 1% of success and wealth not only in America, but in the world. Kaepernick began these protests during the political terms of a black President, black attorney general, dozens of black members of the Senate and House of Representatives, and countless black mayors and governors across the nation.
If America was genuinely systemically racist, there would not be so many examples of people of color at the highest levels of business, academia and the civil magistrate.
Individual racism, of course, is another story. Small bouts of individual racism certainly exist in the white community,as well as the black community, and every other racially unique people group there is. That is an entirely different problem that people can tackle individually, but it is not one that is at all solved by protesting one of the only countries in the world where every race has an equal opportunity or disrespecting the military and law enforcement
In fact, the problem of individual racism is only spurred on by people like Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick claimed the victimhood of systemic racism, oppression, and hate, while literally preparing to play a game for his living. A living that earned him personally over thirty-nine million dollars.
Privilege for who?
Kaepernick, and every player who has followed his lead since the first protest has displayed not only hypocrisy but incredible disrespect for the country that gave them the opportunity to reach such high levels of success. America is THE country in the world where every citizen has the same opportunity to rise up and to achieve their American Dream through hard work. It is a nation where no matter the color of one’s skin, every person has the chance to create a good life for themselves. These pro athletes are themselves examples of taking advantage of their immense talent, working hard to reach the summit of pro sports and walking through the doors of opportunity that included full-ride scholarships and immense wealth. How could they call the system oppressive when they themselves are shining examples of the PRIVILEGE of living in the USA?
For Kaepernick to claim that America is oppressive and racist against people of color while standing at the height of financial and social success is the epitome of hypocrisy and a display of ungratefulness to the people and nation that afforded him the life he now lives.
America was founded by men and women of every color and variety who longed for freedom, whose hearts beat to the music of patriotism. Through the decades of America’s existence, her citizens have taken pride in her uniqueness, in her liberty, and in her opportunities. They have sung her anthem with passion, proud to be a part of the land of the free and the home of the brave.
The systemically racist narrative circulated by leftist Democrats is not spreading awareness of oppression – it is oppression. It brainwashes the black community into thinking that they are victims, that they are held back, and that they aren’t afforded the same opportunities for success as the rest of the population. It holds them back from the independence of thought, independence of action, and independence of lifestyle.
The goal of the liberals circulating this narrative? Votes. If a group of people consistently believes that they are oppressed, they will consistently vote for the candidate who offers them freedom from oppression. So that candidate and it’s party must consistently feed that oppression mindset, promising free things, telling the people that they deserve an easy life, that an easy life is freedom. And they tell the people that they are oppressed, so the people believe, so the people vote. It’s a vicious cycle.
Kapernick and other anthem protestors have bought into this lie, and are popularizing it. To them, America is not a land of liberty to be grateful for and take pride in. To them, America is something shameful when in reality- America should be ashamed of them. It is only because of her freedom and her liberty that they have the right to speak so disrespectfully of their nation.
America is a truly great experiment, one that has afforded rich and beautiful lives to her citizens. America is the only nation with such bounty, such opportunity, and such liberty. In order to preserve those things, we as a nation must first recognize them, cherish them, and hold to them. We should be grateful to the veterans who have fought for these freedoms so we will always take the opportunity to stand for our nation and our flag and afford the honor rightly due our brave veterans who have fought and died for America remain free and her people to prosper.
